About QuickFolders

QuickFolders is a thunderbird extension created by Alexander Malfait and me (Axel Grude).

Folder Tabs - cuts through the clutter of the folders sidebar by having your most important folders as tabs. Open folders and sub folders, move/copy mails without scrolling around or searching. Use categories for filtering the faves!

To get a better idea of what the extension does, head on over to the screenshots section! We hope that somebody in the community contributes some user documentation at some stage. You can contact me or Alex via the member list.

Latest News

Three new locales were added: Japanese (Masahiko Imanaka), Portuguese (Marcelo Ghelman) and Russian (Anton Pinsky). Many thanks to all Contributors from Babelzilla, you're doing fantastic work!!

I have been asked by several users who had changed over from Thunderbird to Postbox Email client to make QuickFolders compatible. In the latest versoin 1.6 there are few things fixed that will make working with QF easier. The color submenu now shows the colors on the Menu.

As of version 1.6.1 QuickFOlders is also compatible with SeaMonkey version 2.0

A Brief Description

This extension adds an extra toolbar to Thunderbird. When you drag a mail folder to it, you get a tab that acts as shortcut to that mail folder. This supports full drag and drop, like the corresponding folder in the folder tree - You can drag messages on it to move/copy them to the folder, and access the bookmarked folders through keyboard shortcuts.

This is handy when you have a large tree of folders for clients or projects, but use only a few of them at the same time.

Getting Started with QuickFolders

After installing Quickfolders, this is what Thunderbird will look like:

Next you should simply pull some of the folders on the left up to the new toolbar.

The result is a new tab with the name of the folder. Now try to add another folder (the Inbox is probably a good idea as we will need this often):

You can rename this by right-clicking and selecting rename (I am using a different theme here that supports icons in menus - for some reason TB does not support the icon menus out of the box) QuickFolders will prompt you to enter a new name:

This will rename it in the toolbar but the folder itself will keep its old name. This is important to remember so you can avoided confusion. Vice versa, if you rename the folder itself the quickfolder toolbar will NOT get a new name.

You can now change between the 2 folders (Studio and Inbox) quickly by clicking the corresponding tabs (Studio and ::Entry::). Since the Inbox should be at the left hand side, I simply drag the tab to the left of the Studio folder.

But the real power of this extension is revealed when you try and drag some emails on the tabs. Let's say I got a newsletter in my Inbox that I think should be stored in the Studio folder: Click it and drag to the Studio tab: (The Studio Tab does not have to be highlighted for this)

You have probably noticed on the previous image that a menu was shown under the tab - this happens if the folder contains subfolders. These also accept draged emails - to achieve this drag the emails first to the tab and wait for the menu to popup; then continue to drag down to the subfolder. Once the correct subfolder is highlighted let go of the mouse key.

Numbers, Shortcuts and other Options

You might have noticed that the first 10 tabs have digits 1. through 0. in front of them, these are shortcuts and can be used with the key combination [ALT]+[digit] in order to jump to the folder. You can switch of this behavior (and/or the display of the digit) in the option window. To open it, just right-click an empty area on the QuickFolders toolbar and select 'QuickFolders Options':

The option 'Display Shortcut...' (boxed in red) controls whether the shortcut number is displayed. The options 'Use keyboard shortcuts' and 'Use Ctrl instead of Alt' control the actual shortcut behavior. Here, you can also make the 'Quickfolders' label at the start of the QuickFolders toolbar invisible in order to safe space. There are a couple of other different options here that make QuickFolders behave slightly differently, experiment with these and tailor it to your needs.
